Well, all-in-all, making a qb change right now is not a good decision. After all, these are still kids and they are gonna make mistakes. I didn't go to the game, but I did listen to it. On defense, it sounded like the defensive ends got sucked in on almost every play. Don't know why, but they were. When you let either Miles kid get into the open field or turn the corner, they will make you miss tackles 9 out of every 10 times. That is where the corners should be coming up. Quit trying to strip the ball, instead, tackle them, and tackle them hard. Be a swarming defense. They(CW) didn't seem to be doing that at all last week, or the week before that.
Something that always hurt our CBs in high school IMO was the fact that we didnt have enough good CBs and WRs to let them see game speed and skill in practice in a live scrimmage...only in one on one drills etc.
7-on-7's are great practice for that, and you can switch guys in & out easily between WR & CB in order to get them their reps, even if you do have players that play both ways.Quote:

Flagged it against Haysi in the Sullivan North game and their Haysi's D coordinator didn't like it. North turned around and done the same thing a couple of drives later. He was fine then and we talked at halftime. They didn't think it was a rule, and I guess that just shows why coaches and officials need more rule book time. I still remember Brandon Green being flagged for it in 98 against PV. He was put in at cb like on the last play of the half to defend a hail mary. He just ran with the receiver and when he saw him looking for the ball he raised both his arms and the ball hit him in the back of the hands. He never touched the wr. I was mad as hell.
Back to the Clintwood debacle for a minute, I think Mullins is in denial about things. Reading his comments in the paper make him seem clueless. He called the JJK game a "great game" even though his team was lucky to win over a team his team should have beaten by 5 td's. It was just as confusing reading the JIB postgame comments.

Maybe I should have said it differently....cuz there is a way to get away with it. And, I was meaning you could more or less get away with it. If you coach your CB to put his arm between the arms of the WR when he attempts to catch the ball, you also coach him in that movement to extend his hand into the WRs line of sight...ie. in front of his face. And, Cane, me and you just ain't gonna agree on what makes a good CB or defense...but the better your CBs are the better your defense is....that's why they get the big bucks in the NFL in relation to other defensive positions. There's not many you can put on an island 99% of the time and consistantly win that match up. Same goes for HS...if all you have to devote to the WRs is 2 CBs and a Safety, and you succeed in defending the pass and get run support as well on the edges, you are going to win most all of your games. Alot of local teams just throw a player out there on the corners who is adequate at one or the other....but that's not my idea of what you need out there.Quote:

Here's where I disagree, b/c HS WR's aren't that good either, especially in Virginia Region D/Division 1. You don't need an NFL corner to cover them. You need a kid that knows the fundamentals about how to cover a route and turn his head when the ball's coming. He may not "win" 100% of the time, but he'll be more effective than a kid who's only tool is to face-guard as the ball's coming. Remember--it's called pass defense and not receiver defense for a reason.Quote:

As you say, if all you have to devote to the WR's is 2 CB's and a Safety, and they trot out 4-wide against you...then what? Do you go zero coverage and hope you get to the QB first? Or do you have that planned for enough to be able to put 4 CB's who understand pass D past the point of simple face-guarding in the game and have at least one safety over the top? I think a good staff, good coordinator would make sure he has the latter, otherwise--prepare to be burnt like toast.

Mine either. I think we're on the same page on a lot of this, I just don't think we agree that you can indeed teach a HS kid proper pass coverage skills beyond face-guarding which is illegal and can get you into penalty troubles.Quote:

They are. What I said wasn't an attempt do denegrate them either. They're much improved from last year. They play extremely hard on defense. They're not that talented on offense though and what 2/3 of the kids that Clintwood has starting have either started or contributed to 2 teams that played for a state title. Kelly is no where close to that point yet. I think the JJK/JIB game should be a good one and will be much more competitive than JIB's last game.Quote:
